Texas Judge Criticizes Rodeo, Accusing It of Racism, Sexism, and 'Manhandling'

A Harris County judge, Lina Hidalgo, has accused the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo of mistreatment, alleging that she was manhandled while attending a concert at the event this week. The incident occurred when Hidalgo and her group, which included another elected official, children, and the parents of a deceased US Air Force sergeant, were denied access to a VIP area and subsequently escorted out of the venue.

Despite receiving $9,000 worth of complimentary tickets, Hidalgo questioned whether her treatment was motivated by racism or sexism. The group was prevented from entering the premium floor access area, known as "the dirt," because they had not purchased the required $425 wristbands, as the show was sold out.

In a letter addressed to rodeo officials, Hidalgo expressed her disappointment at the incident, stating that she was not seeking special treatment but merely trying to help community members enjoy the event. Rodeo representatives countered by stating that Hidalgo was repeatedly asked to return to her designated seats before being escorted out of the venue when she refused to comply.

The rodeo officials emphasized that the same access policies apply to everyone and refuted claims of discrimination based on gender or ethnicity. Despite receiving complimentary tickets for previous nights, Hidalgo argued that her treatment may have been different had she been a male county executive, citing concerns about physical force and discrimination faced by Hispanics.

Hidalgo's allegations have sparked a debate about the treatment of public officials and the underlying attitudes of some individuals. In response to the incident, the Houston Police Officers’ Union shared a satirical illustration on social media, while Hidalgo shared videos and audio recordings to support her claims.

As the chief executive of Harris County, overseeing a budget exceeding $4 billion, Judge Lina Hidalgo's accusations have raised questions about fairness, privilege, and treatment of individuals in positions of authority.
