Tiny Island's Control Could Determine Outcome of Iran War

An island one-third the size of Manhattan, Kharg Island, plays a crucial role in controlling nearly all Iranian crude oil exports, a factor that experts believe could be pivotal in President Trump's strategy towards Tehran.

Located approximately 16 miles off the Iranian coast in the Persian Gulf, Kharg Island is a strategic asset that is challenging to defend and easier to isolate, drawing the attention of administration planners. According to Mohammed Soliman, a senior fellow at the Middle East Institute in Washington, Kharg Island manages approximately 90% of Iran's crude oil exports. Disrupting its operations would not only impact Iran's military budget but also jeopardize essential services that sustain Iranian society.

Soliman highlighted that losing control of Kharg Island, even temporarily, would trigger a severe security and societal crisis in Iran. The financial implications would be significant, leading to a substantial revenue shortfall, currency devaluation, increased inflation, and a strain on subsidies, exacerbating the country's economic challenges.

Sources close to the administration suggest that seizing Kharg Island is not a matter of if, but when, given its critical importance in the conflict. While the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) are eager to take control sooner, US commanders prioritize neutralizing Iran's offensive capabilities before targeting Kharg Island.

The disruption caused by the conflict has already impacted oil shipments from Kharg Island, primarily destined for China. The ongoing hostilities in the region have led to a slowdown in oil exports from the Persian Gulf, affecting global trade dynamics. The potential for a US military operation to seize Kharg Island has been a subject of discussion, with experts pointing out the leverage such a move could provide the US in shaping Iran's oil supply routes.

Former administration official John Ullyot emphasized that capturing Kharg Island would be a high-stakes endeavor with significant economic and geopolitical implications. While Trump has drawn parallels with his actions in Venezuela, Ullyot suggested that a naval blockade might be a strategic alternative to a ground operation.

President Trump expressed optimism about the swift resolution of the conflict, hinting at a short-term outcome. The president underscored the importance of determining the administration's approach in the coming stages of the conflict.
