Texas duo arrested for using drone-flown fake crows to smuggle contraband into Louisiana prison

Two women from Texas were arrested for attempting to smuggle drugs and cellphones into a federal prison in Louisiana using a fake crow flown by a drone. Melanie Jean Worthington, 38, and Kassy Marie Cole, 41, were reportedly paid $40,000 to transport meth, marijuana, phones, and tobacco into the Grant Parish prison.

The women's elaborate scheme was foiled by authorities early Monday, leading to their arrest by the Grant Parish Sheriff’s Office. The contraband was concealed inside decoy crows, which were released over the prison from a drone operated by the women. The fake bird was equipped with a full head, beak, eyes, and tail-feathers, mostly made from tape and plastic bags.

It is unclear whether the items were meant to be dropped off at once or in multiple attempts. This incident marked the ninth and tenth arrests this year for individuals attempting to smuggle banned items into the prison.

Worthington faces charges of possession of methamphetamine and marijuana with intent to distribute, as well as taking contraband into a penal institution. Cole, who had an outstanding warrant, was charged with possession of methamphetamine and synthetic marijuana with intent to distribute, and taking contraband into a penal institution.

Last year, over 50 people were caught trying to smuggle prohibited items into the Grant Parish prison, including drugs like oxycodone and Psilocybin mushrooms, and even 12 gallons of vodka in one instance.
