Former California Republican Representative Kevin Kiley is breaking away from his party to combat "extreme hyperpartisanship" as he prepares for a challenging reelection campaign by registering as an Independent.
Kiley emphasized that his decision to become unaffiliated with either major party was driven by his concerns over the divisive political climate, citing the longest government shutdown in history as a consequence of extreme partisanship. He clarified that he did not consult with any party leaders or House Speaker Mike Johnson before making this move.
Although he will maintain his ties with the Republican caucus, Kiley pledged to be an "independent voice" and stressed his commitment to prioritizing the needs of his constituents over party loyalty. He expressed frustration with partisanship itself rather than directly criticizing party leadership.
Facing a tough battle to retain his House seat in the newly redrawn California congressional districts, Kiley decided to run in CA-06 instead of CA-03 due to the Democratic advantage in his current district. He is running against several Democratic candidates, including pediatrician Dr. Richard Pan, Sacramento County District Attorney Thien Ho, Planned Parenthood representative Lauren Babb-Tomlinson, and West Sacramento Mayor Martha Guerrero.
Kiley condemned the redistricting process that reshaped his district under Proposition 50 and highlighted the lack of progress on critical issues like healthcare affordability and government shutdowns. He pointed to his opposition to certain policies during his time in Congress, such as Trump's tariffs on Canada, as evidence of his independence from partisan influences.
Despite the anticipated Democratic resurgence in the upcoming midterm elections, Kiley expressed confidence in his ability to collaborate across party lines on issues like healthcare and housing. While declining to disclose details of private conversations, he mentioned having a brief call with House Speaker Johnson following his departure from the Republican Party.
