Mayor Daniel Lurie of San Francisco Accused of Involvement in Brawl Injuring His Bodyguard, Say Police

San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie has been linked to a chaotic altercation that resulted in injuries to his security guard, according to a police report.

The incident unfolded when Lurie encountered individuals sitting on the sidewalk near the drug-affected Tenderloin neighborhood. Upon instructing his driver to stop, the mayor exited the vehicle, prompting his security officer, Joel Aguayo, to follow suit. Lurie approached the individuals and requested them to move, but encountered resistance from at least one of them, identified as Tony Phillips.

Despite informing Phillips that Aguayo was a San Francisco police officer, the man refused to comply with requests to relocate. Witness statements detailed in the report described how Phillips became argumentative and confrontational, eventually moving towards Aguayo in a threatening manner.

A physical altercation ensued, captured on video, during which Aguayo pushed Phillips to the ground. Lurie, observed in the footage, appeared to briefly witness the scuffle before seeking assistance from his driver, officer Nicolas Boccio.

Boccio intervened as another individual, Abraham Simon, engaged in a confrontation with him. Simon ceased his aggression upon Boccio drawing his service weapon. Despite their efforts, the pair was unable to subdue Phillips, who was taken into custody by arriving officers.

Phillips now faces charges including threatening an officer and violating a court order, while Simon is charged with obstructing an officer. Aguayo sustained injuries during the incident, prompting an investigation by the city's Department of Police Accountability.

Lurie addressed the incident in an Instagram video, emphasizing his commitment to engaging with the community and addressing public safety concerns. However, the mayor has faced criticism following the altercation, with some questioning his approach to interacting with the homeless population.

The individuals involved are set to be arraigned, with the investigation ongoing.
