Surgeon puzzled by TikTok mom's death following tummy tuck

The plastic surgeon who performed a tummy tuck on a TikTok mom before she died from a catastrophic brain injury expressed his bewilderment over the tragic event.

Dr. Shahryar Tork, a double-board-certified plastic surgeon based in Cincinnati, stated that the surgery on Rachel Tussey on Feb. 25 was completed successfully and without complications. He mentioned that she was in excellent condition and awake when he last saw her in recovery. Tork conveyed his sorrow for Rachel Tussey and her family, offering his thoughts during this devastating time in a statement to TMZ.

Rachel Tussey, a 47-year-old mother of three, had shared her cosmetic surgery journey with over 27,000 followers on TikTok in the days leading up to the procedure. Just before the surgery, she posted a video expressing confidence and excitement, saying, "I'm in good hands. I know God's got my back. Let's do this," with hashtags #midlifeglowup and #mommymakeover.

However, what was anticipated as a routine procedure turned into a nightmare. Rachel's husband, Jeremy Tussey, shared that he was informed by the doctor after the operation that everything had gone well. Shortly after, Rachel began experiencing distress, leading to medical staff performing CPR. She was swiftly taken to TriHealth Bethesda North Hospital, where she was put on life support.

Doctors later informed Jeremy that Rachel had suffered a severe brain injury due to a lack of oxygen for over six minutes during the surgery. After being moved to hospice care and taken off life support, Rachel passed away.

Bernard Layne III, a personal injury attorney representing the family, disclosed that Rachel had sustained a permanent anoxic brain injury during a surgical procedure at a private surgical center in Cincinnati. Layne emphasized that the primary focus at present is on supporting the grieving family and refrained from commenting on any aspect of culpability or liability in the matter.

Jeremy expressed his determination to uncover what transpired, suggesting that there may have been incompetence leading to the tragic outcome. Rachel leaves behind her husband and their three children, Tristan, Alec, and Livi.
