Colorado Mayor Announces Cancer Diagnosis at City Council Meeting with Determined Attitude

During a recent city council meeting in Arvada, Colorado, Mayor Lauren Simpson bravely announced that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. Despite the heartbreaking news, Simpson expressed her determination to fight the disease and "kick its butt."

The 42-year-old Democratic mayor, elected in 2023, disclosed her diagnosis to the public, stating, "I wish I wasn't, but I need to share with everybody now that over the holidays I was diagnosed with breast cancer."

Fortunately, Simpson assured the community that her medical team had detected the cancer early, and it had not advanced beyond stage one. She revealed plans to undergo surgery the following Monday and temporarily delegate her mayoral responsibilities to Mayor Pro Tem Randy Moorman.

Simpson entrusted Moorman, a councilmember representing District 1 in Arvada, located 10 miles northwest of Denver, with delivering the upcoming State of the City address. She expressed confidence in the city's team, emphasizing that operations would continue smoothly during her absence.

The mayor, a first-term official and mother to a daughter with her husband Steven, remained resolute in her commitment to a swift recovery and a prompt return to her duties. She emphasized her determination to overcome the challenge posed by cancer, stating, "I don't know cancer knew who it was picking when it picked me, but best believe I'm going to kick its butt and I'm going to be back here with you all soon."

Simpson, who previously served on the city council, acknowledged the overwhelming support she had received upon sharing her diagnosis. Encouraging others to prioritize their health, she urged, "everybody, get your tests done. It's really important, see your doctors and I'm going to kick cancer's butt and I'll see everybody in April."
