Final words of Texas man executed for fatally stabbing girlfriend and her son revealed as survivor watches

A man in Texas was executed on Wednesday for fatally stabbing his girlfriend and her 8-year-old son in 2013. Cedric Ricks, 51, offered multiple apologies to the surviving older son who witnessed the tragic incident.

The lethal injection of the sedative pentobarbital was administered at 6:55 p.m. CDT at the state penitentiary in Huntsville, leading to Ricks' death. The crime took place in the Dallas-Fort Worth suburb of Bedford, where 30-year-old Roxann Sanchez and her son Anthony Figueroa were killed.

During the execution, Ricks directed his apologies towards seven relatives of the victims, particularly focusing on Marcus Figueroa, the surviving son who endured 25 stab wounds. Despite the emotional encounter, Marcus remained composed as he watched through a glass window just steps away from where Ricks was restrained on a gurney. Visible scars on Marcus' neck were indicative of the attack he survived.

In his final statement, Ricks expressed remorse for his actions, acknowledging the pain he caused and asking for forgiveness from the victims' family. He specifically addressed Marcus, expressing deep regret for taking his mother and brother away. Ricks, visibly emotional, hoped to find peace in heaven and apologized for the suffering he caused.

Following the injection, Ricks exhibited physical reactions before ultimately being pronounced dead, with witnesses including family members of the victims present. They chose not to engage with the media following the execution.

The tragic incident unfolded when Ricks and Sanchez were involved in a heated argument, escalating to a violent confrontation in their apartment. Ricks, armed with a knife, attacked Sanchez and her sons, resulting in the fatal stabbings. Marcus managed to survive by pretending to be dead until Ricks left the scene. Ricks fled the scene but was later apprehended in Oklahoma.

Ricks had a history of anger issues and testified during the trial that he was acting in self-defense during the altercation. Despite his remorse and apologies, the legal proceedings culminated in his execution after the US Supreme Court rejected his final appeal.

The Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles had also denied Ricks' request for clemency or a reprieve. This execution marks the second in Texas and the sixth in the country this year, highlighting the state's historical frequency of capital punishment cases.
