Impoverished families have sought refuge beneath the highway, as confirmed by a former resident named Edwin. He disclosed that families opt for this unconventional living space due to exorbitant rental costs elsewhere. Erecting a wall and renting a space under the highway can cost between $12 and $20, providing a semblance of financial security despite the unhygienic and cramped environment.
As Goldberg delved deeper into the tunnel, he encountered unbearable odors and witnessed families crammed into tiny rooms, some accommodating up to eight individuals.
