Transgender triple killer relocated from home with 2 foster children following delayed notification to authorities

A transgender triple killer who had been living with two foster children, despite authorities being informed of the situation in late December 2025, has been removed from the home, as reported by local media.

Reginald Arthurell, who began transitioning to a woman after his release from prison in 2020, was taken from the residence after a raid by heavily armed officers on Monday, according to radio station 2GB. The children, aged 12 and 14, had been residing with him for several months.

The Minister for Families and Communities of New South Wales (NSW) issued an apology on Tuesday, acknowledging that the situation was unacceptable. Kate Washington told 2GB, "It is entirely unacceptable for a vulnerable child in the care of the state to be living with a triple murderer. It should never have happened, and I'm deeply apologetic for what has occurred." She noted that poor decisions were made when authorities first became aware of the situation and assured that a review is ongoing to address the systemic issues that led to this situation.

Arthurell had moved into a foster home in Sydney late last year, where an elderly woman was already caring for two children. The woman, who had an approved placement with the New South Wales Department of Communities and Justice, invited Arthurell to live with them as a housemate after meeting him at a hospital where she worked.

Authorities were alerted to the living arrangement only after the carer's daughter raised concerns. Prior to moving in, Arthurell had a criminal history that included three murders over three decades. He was convicted of manslaughter in 1974 for killing his stepfather, fatally bashed a sailor during a robbery in 1981, and beat his fiancée to death in 1995 while on parole.

Arthurell, who spent nearly 39 years in custody for the murders, began transitioning into a woman after his release in November 2020. The process was ongoing, with plans for gender-affirming surgery and public appearances in the transgender community.

Following his removal from the foster home, Arthurell is now in private accommodation, as reported by ABC Australia.
