Sen. Rand Paul warns of potential GOP losses in midterms amid ongoing Iran conflict

WASHINGTON — Senator Rand Paul, known for his skepticism of foreign interventionism, has cautioned that Republicans could face a "disastrous" outcome in the upcoming midterm elections if the conflict with Iran continues. Paul emphasized the various political risks associated with the war, such as the potential increase in oil prices and the mounting cost of the military campaign, which is already showing unfavorable results in early polling.

Speaking on Fox Business Network's "Mornings with Maria," Paul pointed out that current polling data indicates Republicans trailing behind Democrats in generic congressional ballot preferences. Historically, the party in power at the White House tends to lose seats in midterm elections, making Republicans the perceived underdogs in House races.

Paul warned that if the conflict persists and leads to high gas and oil prices, coupled with ongoing military action against Iran, the midterm election outcomes could be dire. Gas prices have already risen to an average of $3.54 nationally, a significant increase from before the start of Operation Epic Fury against Iran on Feb. 28.

The disruption in oil flow through the critical Strait of Hormuz due to the conflict has contributed to the spike in prices, with over a fifth of the world's seaborne oil passing through that chokepoint annually. President Trump's administration has considered providing naval escorts for oil vessels navigating the area.

Despite crude oil briefly surpassing $100 a barrel, it has since dropped back down to $85. President Trump has issued strong warnings to Iran, emphasizing the consequences of any actions that obstruct oil flow through the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump administration officials have sought to reassure the public and markets that oil and gasoline prices will stabilize soon, with Energy Secretary Chris Wright highlighting the administration's efforts to lower energy prices successfully.

Senator Paul has criticized Operation Epic Fury, arguing that Congress should have been involved in the decision-making process before engaging in military action. Expressing sympathy for the Iranian people, Paul emphasized the importance of individuals fighting for their own liberty rather than relying on external intervention.
