Report: Trump threatens action against Khamenei's son if he refuses to cooperate with US

President Trump is reportedly in favor of assassinating Iran's new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei if he does not comply with US demands, particularly concerning the abandonment of Iran's nuclear weapons program, as per sources cited in the Wall Street Journal. The elimination of the new supreme leader, if necessary, is likely to be carried out by Israeli forces, similar to the recent attack that resulted in the death of Mojtaba's father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in Tehran on Feb. 28, according to current and former US officials interviewed by the Journal.

Following the fatal strike that claimed the lives of at least 49 other high-ranking Iranian officials, Iran has been embroiled in conflict with ongoing rocket attacks from the US and Israel. Mojtaba Khamenei's mother, wife, and son were also casualties of the strike, and Mojtaba himself sustained injuries whose severity remains uncertain, as reported by Iranian media.

Recent reports indicated Mojtaba's likely succession to power after his father, with the official announcement made last Sunday. President Trump has expressed discontent with this development, labeling Mojtaba as "unacceptable" and emphasizing that no one would hold power in Iran without US approval. Trump stressed the importance of appointing a leader who can bring peace and harmony to Iran.

Mojtaba Khamenei, aged 56, lacked prior government experience but played a significant role in his father's regime, often referred to as "the power behind the robes" in leaked US diplomatic cables from the 2000s. He was accused of manipulating Iran's presidential elections to entrench regime loyalists and managed the family's financial interests, contributing to their substantial wealth while the Iranian populace faced oppression.

The future collaboration between Mojtaba Khamenei and the US remains uncertain. Some speculate that his appointment aims to demonstrate Iran's resilience against external attacks. The tragic loss of his wife and son in the recent strike adds a somber note, as leaked cables revealed Mojtaba's struggles with infertility and the challenges he faced in building a family.
