Iowa mother accused of spiking lasagna with opioids to induce miscarriage in pregnant relative: police

An Iowa mother has been accused of attempting to induce a miscarriage in a pregnant relative by allegedly lacing a holiday lasagna with opioids, as reported by the police.

The mother, identified as 36-year-old Amber Snow, is said to have mixed oxycodone into the pasta dish and provided it to the pregnant woman's family shortly after Christmas last year, according to the Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities stated that the lasagna was specifically prepared with the intention of causing a miscarriage in the pregnant family member who received it.

The victim's family raised concerns in January after suspecting that the "family size" pan of pasta had been tampered with.

Following testing by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, oxycodone, a schedule II narcotic, was confirmed to be present in the lasagna, CBS2 Iowa reported.

During the investigation, police uncovered evidence of internet searches related to the incident, as well as exchanged messages and phone conversations with a suspected accomplice. Further arrests are anticipated, law enforcement officials mentioned.

Although it remains unclear whether the pregnant woman consumed the dish, authorities stated that the fetus was unharmed. It has not been specified if the baby has since been born.

Snow, who shares a child with a member of the victim's family, allegedly knew about the tainted lasagna and objected to her mother's delivery of it, according to the police.

The motive behind the attempt to terminate the unborn child has not been revealed by the authorities.

The Mayo Clinic warns that the use of oxycodone during pregnancy can result in severe opioid withdrawal symptoms in newborns.
