Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus to shutter multiple SoCal stores

Luxury shopping in Southern California is undergoing changes as three high-end department stores are set to close in the region.

Saks Fifth Avenue will be closing two of its stores, one at South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa and the other at The Gardens on El Paseo in Palm Desert. Additionally, a Neiman Marcus store at Westfield Topanga in Canoga Park will also be shutting down, impacting the San Fernando Valley shopping scene.

These closures are part of a nationwide restructuring initiative by Saks Global, the parent company of both luxury department store chains. The company announced on March 6 that it plans to close a total of 12 Saks Fifth Avenue stores and three Neiman Marcus locations across the country as part of its efforts to streamline operations following a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing earlier this year.

Geoffroy van Raemdonck, the CEO of Saks Global, stated, “This strategic optimization is part of our ongoing transformation and rooted in our long-term view of our business. Our go-forward store portfolio will comprise the best performing and most desirable locations in markets with the highest concentration of luxury customers.”

The closures will impact two prominent luxury markets in California. The Saks store at South Coast Plaza caters to affluent shoppers in Orange County, while the Palm Desert location serves wealthy residents and seasonal visitors in the Coachella Valley. The Neiman Marcus store at Westfield Topanga has been a key anchor for the bustling San Fernando Valley mall.

It is worth noting that not all Saks locations in Southern California are affected by the restructuring. The Saks Fifth Avenue store in Beverly Hills is not on the closure list and is expected to remain open.

These changes reflect the evolving landscape of luxury retail, with companies focusing on online shopping and investing in flagship locations.
