NYC Street with Numerous Complaints Claims Life of Scooter Driver

A tragic incident occurred this week on Liberty Avenue in Ozone Park, Queens, where a scooter driver lost his life after hitting a pothole. The street has been a subject of numerous complaints from locals over the years, with records showing hundreds of 311 complaints since 2020, including at least a dozen complaints this year alone.

The 46-year-old man was riding an electric scooter on Monday night when he was thrown off after encountering a pothole near 106th Street, as reported by the police. Authorities responded to a 911 call about an unconscious person on the road around 9:30 p.m. and found the victim suffering from severe head injuries. Despite being rushed to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, he did not survive.

Following the incident, the city Department of Transportation promptly repaired the roadway. However, data analysis reveals a significant number of pothole reports along Liberty Avenue in the past six years, totaling 557 complaints. Additionally, there have been around a dozen 311 calls specifically about potholes on this street in 2026, all of which have been marked as resolved.

Although the DOT spokesperson mentioned no recent complaints about potholes in the area where the accident occurred, they acknowledged the tragic event and expressed condolences to the victim's family. The agency attributed the increase in potholes to various factors such as snowfall, salt use, and winter weather conditions, stating that efforts are being made to address road conditions.

An ongoing investigation by the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad is in progress. The city has seen a surge in pothole reports this year, with over 14,400 complaints so far, a 59% increase from the previous year. Queens has reported more than half of these complaints. The DOT has filled over 45,100 potholes this year, with an average turnaround time of two days. Despite ongoing efforts, a significant portion of 311 complaints remain unresolved as of the latest data.

The DOT highlighted their continuous efforts to address road repairs, with crews working tirelessly to fill potholes and conduct emergency repairs across the five boroughs. Over 10,000 potholes were filled in the past week alone, and plans are in place to resurface more than 1,100 lane miles this year.
