Jurupa Valley High School Transgender Athlete Takes First Place in Girls Track Event

A transgender high school student from California showcased impressive talent at a recent track-and-field meet, securing three first-place medals in girls’ events. AB Hernandez, a senior at Jurupa Valley High School, participated in the Roosevelt Invitational over the weekend and excelled in the high jump, outperforming the runner-up by nearly a foot.

Hernandez, a biological male, faced scrutiny due to the Trump administration’s threats to cut federal funding to California over transgender sports participation. Despite this, Hernandez clinched the gold in the high jump with a clearance of 5′ 8″, significantly surpassing the 4′ 10″ mark achieved by the second-place finisher.

In addition to the high jump victory, Hernandez also dominated the girls’ long jump and triple jump events, registering distances of 17′ 3¼ ” and 38′ 4″, respectively. This success comes on the heels of a record-breaking win in the girls’ triple jump at the VS California Winter Championships in February, where Hernandez leaped 39′ 10″.

Currently holding the top ranking in the girls’ triple jump for the 2026 outdoor season, with a personal best of 40′ 7.5″, Hernandez's achievements have drawn national attention. Despite facing criticism, Hernandez continues to compete under California state law, which upholds the rights of transgender students to participate in activities aligned with their gender identity.

Amid ongoing federal investigations and debates surrounding transgender sports policies, Hernandez remains a standout athlete in the jumping events as the outdoor season progresses towards the State Championships.
