Fifth staffer exits Karen Bass' office, continuing turnover trend in mayor's communications team

Another senior communications official has departed from Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass' office, marking the latest change in a press team that has seen significant turnover in the past year.

Amanda Crumley, who held the position of Deputy Mayor of Communications, announced on Tuesday that she is leaving the administration after a brief tenure at City Hall. Crumley had joined the mayor's office in January, making her time there just over two months.

In a statement shared with journalist Julia Wick, Crumley explained that she is pursuing work that allows for a more balanced lifestyle. She expressed continued support for Mayor Bass and anticipation of her reelection, stating, "I decided I want to do something better suited to having a balanced life, which is important to me."

When contacted via email, an automatic reply indicated that Crumley was already out of the office. Her departure adds to the ongoing turnover within the communications team.

The series of changes began last summer when Deputy Press Secretary Gabby Maarse left the mayor's office for a role in communications with LA28. Zach Seidl, a long-serving communications advisor to Bass, departed City Hall in October 2025 after working with the mayor for about a decade.

Following Seidl's exit, communications strategist Samuel Jean stepped in as interim communications director. However, Jean's current status within the mayor's office is unclear, as he is no longer based at City Hall and his role is uncertain. Press Secretary Clara Karger has also left the administration for a position in the private sector.

The turnover in the communications team comes at a crucial time for Mayor Bass as she faces a challenging reelection campaign in Los Angeles. With key issues such as homelessness, public safety, and city spending taking center stage, the scrutiny on the mayor's messaging operation is intensifying as the campaign season approaches.
