A fifth-grade student's hand-drawn design will soon be featured on hats, tote bags, and T-shirts in Greenpoint, New York City, after winning a contest held by Jubilee Marketplace. Rosemary “Rosie” Burgess, the talented artist behind the winning ramen-eating seal design, expressed her surprise and joy at being chosen. The competition was open to fourth- and fifth-grade students at PS 31, with the entire neighborhood participating in the voting process.
Rosie's design received 25% of the 822 votes after the selection was narrowed down to seven finalists. Her inspiration for the artwork stemmed from her love for seals and her favorite spicy ramen snack from Jubilee Marketplace. The contest was initiated by Jubilee owner Young Kim as a way to engage with the community and support local talent.
In a generous gesture, Kim donated $1,000 to PS 31’s culinary arts program and awarded Rosie a $500 gift card to a local bookstore. The other six finalists each received a $100 voucher. Kim plans to produce the merchandise featuring Rosie's design with a local print shop and expects the line to be available within the next six weeks.
Furthermore, Kim announced that all profits from the merchandise sales will be donated to PS 31 and various local charities and food pantries. He emphasized his commitment to creating a win-win situation for everyone involved, supporting the community while offering customers appealing products. The decision-making process for selecting the winner was delegated to school administrators and customers, who ultimately chose Rosie's design as the standout favorite among the submissions.
