Concerns for Families Drive Surge in Fundraiser for Iranian Footballers

A fundraiser set up for Iranian women's football players who sought asylum in Australia has exceeded $50,000 in less than 48 hours. The players, who fled their handlers during the Asian Cup, have faced pressure from regime-linked individuals while in Australia.

Six members of Iran’s women’s national team have obtained humanitarian visas after refusing to sing the national anthem during the tournament and fleeing their Gold Coast hotel due to safety concerns. Despite finding safety in Australia, the players remain anxious about their families in Iran.

According to AusIran, Iranian athletes abroad are often coerced into signing documents that grant the government control over their family assets. This situation leaves their families vulnerable to repercussions back home.

Efforts to support the six players still in Australia are in the early stages, with a GoFundMe campaign aiming to raise $75,000 for their resettlement needs. The response has been overwhelming, with offers of legal, counseling, and other support pouring in.

Allegations have surfaced about the close monitoring and restrictions imposed on the players by officials and minders linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps during their stay in Australia. The players were closely watched and had limited freedom of movement.

Currently under Australian government protection, the players have been relocated to a secure location with limited contact to allow them space as they navigate their situation. The spokesperson highlighted the players' youth and emphasized the challenges they face in rebuilding their lives in Australia.

There are concerns for the teammates who returned to Iran, as they may face severe consequences for their actions during the tournament. The players who sought asylum have expressed gratitude for the support from Australians and have developed a strong affinity for their new home.

Despite the uncertainties ahead, the players are appreciative of the opportunities provided in Australia and are determined to start afresh in their new environment.
